After IELTS – What’s the Next Step?

Step 1: Skills Assessment (Very Important)

For teachers, the assessing authority is:

Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL)

You must submit:

  • Teaching degree certificate

  • Academic transcripts

  • Evidence of supervised teaching practice

  • IELTS results

  • Passport

  • National ID

  • Birtth cert

  • ⚠️ You cannot lodge EOI without a positive skills assessment.

Step 2: Calculate Your Migration Points

Points are based on:

  • Age

  • English score

  • Teaching experience

  • Education level

Minimum required: 65 points
But competitive occupations often need 75+.

If points are low:

  • Consider Visa 190 (+5 points)

  • Consider Visa 491 (+15 points)

Step 3: Submit Expression of Interest (EOI)

You create a profile in SkillSelect and:

  • Choose 189, 190, or 491

  • Indicate preferred states (for 190/491)

You now wait for:

  • State nomination (190/491) OR

  • Direct invitation (189)

Step 4: Apply for State Nomination (If 190/491)

Each state has its own criteria.
Some prioritize:

  • Early Childhood Teachers

  • Maths & Science Teachers

  • Special Needs Teachers

Step 5: Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Once invited:

  • Lodge visa application

  • Pay government fee

  • Upload documents

Step 6: Medical & Police Clearance

After visa lodgement:

  • Do medical examination

  • Submit police clearance

 Step 7: Visa Grant

You become:

  • Permanent Resident (189/190)
    OR

  • Regional Provisional Resident (491)

 Summary Flow

IELTS → Skills Assessment → EOI → Nomination/Invitation → Visa Lodgement → Medical → Grant
